Summer Driving Hazards to be Aware of
August 7, 2020
The summer is a popular time for vehicle owners to go out and explore new places. Rolling down the windows, turning up the music, and adventuring in your vehicle can be one of the best driving experiences you’ll have, but it’s important to stay safe while enjoying the ride. Take a look at some of the different driving hazards that are more prevalent during the summer, and what you can do to avoid them.
Hazards for Tires
During the summer, you’re using your car more, seeing road construction more frequently, and you might even be driving on different types of terrain than normal. All of these things can negatively impact your tire tread and tire pressure. When even one of your tires has low tread or pressure, you’re more at risk for skidding and accidents.
To prevent tire problems, check pressure and tire tread regularly, especially before a long trip. Additionally, keep your spare tire in good condition so that if you do end up with a flat, you’ll be able to safely make it to a repair shop on four tires.
Hazards for Your Vehicle’s Engine
The engine is a vital component of any vehicle, so it’s essential to keep yours in good working condition. Did you know that during the summer, engines have a higher likelihood of overheating? During hot days, it’s only natural to turn up the A/C while you drive. However, if you happen to use your car’s A/C excessively without a sufficient amount of coolant present, your engine may overheat. If it does overheat, you could be looking at a sizable repair or replacement. Having your engine inspected and A/C coolant checked can help keep you and your car safer this summer.
General Driving Hazards in Summertime
There are other hazards that you should be on the lookout for during the summer. This season brings many younger and less-experienced drivers on the road, as teens have a break from school and are more likely to take road trips and vacations. The nice weather also brings out more motorcyclists and bicyclists, which can be difficult to see due to blind spots.
Additional summer road hazards can come from mother nature herself. The primary weather and wildlife hazards to stay aware of include:
- Sun glares
- Animals in or beside the roadway
- Abrupt storms with heavy rainfall
Avoid Hazards With Proper Vehicle Maintenance
Having your car properly maintained throughout the year is one of the best ways you can avoid many of these driving hazards. During the summer, make sure to have a trusted Annapolis, MD auto repair shop:
- Check your car’s essential fluids and fill up any that are getting low.
- Perform an oil change at the proper mileage.
- Check the pressure and tread of each tire and, if needed, fill to the appropriate pressure level or replace the tire(s).
