Should I Use Synthetic or Conventional Oil?
September 15, 2017
Oil changes are an important, often overlooked aspect of good car maintenance. They help prevent wear, remove any gunk that has built up in the engine, and keep your vehicle running a lot longer. Unfortunately, as vital as these oil changes are, most people don’t know much about the oil that gets put in their vehicle.
This can be problematic, as it means they might not be using the type that’s best for them. Do you know which oil is best for your vehicle? In order to find out, you first need to examine your choices.
There are two types of oil, synthetic and conventional. Each has its pros and cons, so deciding between the two types of oil requires a more in-depth look.
Conventional oil is refined from crude oil. It’s an option that’s significantly cheaper than its synthetic counterpart, which can make it a good choice if your budget is tight.
Additionally, conventional oil is much less free-flowing than synthetic oils which makes it a good option for older vehicle which can experience leaks. In these instances, a synthetic oil will lead to faster oil loss whereas a conventional oil may not leak at all!
Unfortunately, conventional oil does degrade over time faster than synthetic. This means your vehicle will need oil changes more frequently. While inconvenient, more frequent oil changes means means your Annapolis mechanic will have more opportunities to catch engine problems sooner, which in turn lowers your vehicle’s repair costs.
Conventional oil is often a good choice for older vehicles that weren’t made to handle synthetic oil, which is much more free-flowing and refined. So, while it can be a good choice for certain vehicles, conventional oil lacks a lot of the benefits synthetic oil has.
Synthetic oil starts as either a conventional oil base or raw materials and is then crafted and refined to remove impurities and ensure high performance.
There are numerous benefits synthetic oil brings your vehicle. It lasts a lot longer, which means you don’t need to get your oil changed as often. It reduces wear on your engine which means less engine repairs. Synthetic also performs a lot better than conventional oil in extreme weather conditions.
In general, Synthetic oil is a lot more consistent and can improve your vehicle’s performance in a lot of different ways, which makes it a good choice for most vehicles.
