It’s Time to Get Your Tires Rotated
November 1, 2019
Winter weather is just around the corner. Snow, ice, and cold temperatures have a significant effect on our safety on the road, so it’s vital to ensure your vehicle is in the very best condition before the weather arrives. Your tires are highly important to your vehicle’s safety during the winter. Let’s take a quick look at how a tire rotation and other tire maintenance can help you prevent accidents this winter.
What is a Tire Rotation?
The name is quite self-explanatory, but tire rotation is a maintenance service performed by your local auto repair shop where the tires are removed and placed in a different position on the vehicle. Regular rotations can help ensure that your tires wear evenly, improving traction and preserving balanced handling. Some tire manufacturers require vehicle owners to get periodic tire rotations in order to keep the tire warranties valid.
Why Would My Tires Have Uneven Wear?
In a perfect world, all four tires on your vehicle would wear evenly. However, your car’s drivetrain type and vehicle class help to determine how your tires will wear. The front tires on a car with front-wheel drive (FWD) will wear more quickly than the rear tires, for example. The same is true for all-wheel drive (AWD) vehicles, so it’s important to get regular rotations. Uneven tread wear often means less traction, and your tires need good traction in order to keep the chances of sliding, skidding, and getting into an accident on snowy or icy roads low.
When Should I Get My Tires Rotated?
It is recommended that you get a tire rotation for your vehicle about every 6,000-8,000 miles. You may look at your tires and see even wear on all four, but this doesn’t mean a rotation is unnecessary. Because oil changes for your vehicle are recommended every 5,000-10,000 miles, it often makes sense to have your local repair shop perform a tire rotation while your car is in for an oil change. During your oil change, your vehicle is already positioned off the ground on a lift, so it’s the perfect opportunity for the technicians to:
- Check tire tread depth
- Remove stones or other debris
- Check tire pressure
- Spot uneven wear
- Rotate and balance your tires
