How Important is Your Serpentine Belt?
April 4, 2019
Auto maintenance is no joke, especially when it comes to the inner bits and pieces that can easily go unnoticed should you choose not to give them any attention. Understanding what each part of your car is, the role it plays, and its importance is a great first step in understanding your car itself and helping it maintain long term health and safety.
What is a Serpentine Belt?
Serpentine belts are used in vehicle engine systems and to help as the driving force for accompanying pieces like the alternator, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor, water pump, air pump, and other essential parts of your car. To avoid slipping while still wrapping around all of these different components, the belt is wrapped back and forth between the parts, giving it the serpentine shape for which it’s named.
The Other Driver
Serpentine belts are sometimes called driver belts because they’re right there with you when it comes to driving your vehicle. Once your car and engine are running, the serpentine belt won’t stop it’s work until the car does, making it almost as important as the actual driver of the vehicle. While you might be wearing down because the air conditioning isn’t working, your serpentine belt might be wearing down from use over time and causing that AC to stop working.
Know the Signs of a Worn Belt
Just as it’s important to know why you need a serpentine belt, it’s equally important to know the symptoms of a bad or failing belt so that you can help your auto repair team keep your car running smoothly. Though you might not be a mechanic, even looking at the belt with your own eyes every once in a while can help increase the chances that you’ll notice when something’s off before it’s too late.
Know these commons things to look out for before getting your serpentine belt taken care of at your Davidsonville, MD auto repair shop:
