Diagnosing Shudder and Vibration Issues in Your Acura
June 16, 2015
Shudder and vibration issues in Acura can range from a slight shimmy to violent shakes that get your entire car vibrating like a guitar string. If this sounds familiar, your car is trying to tell you something. Bring your Acura over to our Davidsonville, MD Acura repair shop to get the problem checked out. We will let you know if this is a common Acura issue or something specific to your car.
Some Common Causes of Vibration in Acura Include
Imbalanced or Misaligned Tires
Your wheels/tires should come properly balanced and aligned by the factory when you purchase your new Acura. But when you get your tires or any suspension components replaced, balancing has to happen again. Tire imbalance may go unnoticed at lower speeds, but at 60 MPH and higher your vehicle may experience violent shakes. Thankfully, checking and adjusting tire balance and alignment is usually an easy fix.
CV Joint and CV Axle Problems
Failing inner constant velocity (CV) joints and/or axles may also cause strong vibrations, especially during acceleration. CV joints are present in all front-wheel drive vehicles and serve the purpose of connecting the transmission to the wheels. Outer CV joints typically go through more wear than the inner ones, but failure of both is possible with age or after serious impact.
When automatic transmission torque converter fails, your Acura may experience odd vibrations at speeds between 30 and 55 MPH. This is actually a known issue in MDX models and the recommended repair is to replace the torque converter and install a software update for the power train control module.
If you overlook a hazard or drive too fast over a deep pothole, it’s possible to get your wheels bent. And if the bent part is on the inner side of the wheel, you may not notice it from the visual inspection. What you will notice, however, is strong vibration at highway speeds. Sometimes, bent wheels can be straightened, but in case of a sever damage replacement may be necessary.
