Common Winter Car Problems
February 1, 2019
Though winter is coming to a close, we’re not out of the woods yet. We’ve still got a few weeks before the weather starts warming up and those freezing temperatures can spell trouble for your vehicle. Not to mention all of the other potential problems that winter road conditions can bring. Today we’re going to take a look at some of the most common winter car problems and what you should do to keep things moving. Let’s get started.
A Dead Battery is a Big Problem
Extreme temperatures of any kind aren’t good for your battery for one reason or another. Though the heat can certainly kill a car battery, freezing temperatures can make it harder for the battery to do its job. That is to say, it’s likely that the summertime hurt your battery and that you’re only noticing it now because February is putting your battery through the ringer. Either way, we can help you.
Flat Tires Are Never Fun
Low temperatures cause your tires to lose air pressure over time and can even lead to flats and failure. Before you get into your car for the morning commute, take a look at your vehicle’s wheels. Are they looking a little low? If you drive with low tire pressure, you will run the risk of blowout while you’re driving, which can be seriously dangerous for you and anyone else on the road at the time of the blowout. For the most part, if you have a newer vehicle, you will be informed of potential trouble by a light on your dashboard. Older vehicles, however, will need to be inspected regularly.
Rust and Corrosion Can Spell Disaster
Though salt is one of the necessary measures for keeping ice to a minimum on the roads, it can also damage your car if it isn’t cleaned off. Road salt can cause corrosion on important components of your vehicle’s underside including brakes, wheels, axles, and other essential parts. It’s best to keep the salt off of your car and its belly as much as you can with frequent washes and constant vigilance.
