5 Signs Your Transmission Needs Service

October 5, 2020

Your vehicle’s transmission is responsible for delivering the right amount of power from the car’s engine to the wheels. That doesn’t sound like something you’d want to overlook, does it? At one point or another, all vehicles will face transmission problems. Your vehicle will let you know that it’s time to service your transmission by showing these signs:

Problems Shifting Gears

If you’re having trouble shifting gears, it’s most likely due to a faulty transmission. Problems shifting gears can mean things like:

  • Hesitation when putting the vehicle into gear
  • Jerking when shifting gears
  • Falling out of gear when driving
  • Shifting of gears for no apparent reason

If your vehicle is experiencing any of these symptoms, bring it into a repair shop immediately to have your transmission serviced.

Leaking Fluid

Anytime your car leaks it’s not a good sign. If you see the distinctive red fluid leaking from your car, that means that there’s something wrong with your transmission. It doesn’t necessarily mean something major is wrong with your transmission; it could be the result of a loose bolt, a cracked casket, or damaged tubing.

Unusual Noises

If your vehicle is making strange whining, buzzing, or clunking sounds, it can be because of a faulty transmission. This is especially true if your vehicle makes these noises while in neutral. While there are other causes for a car to make strange noises, a problem with the transmission is likely.

Strange Odor

Does it smell like something is burning in your car? That be the result of burnt transmission fluid or overheated gears. Your transmission fluid is essential for cooling the transmission and lubricating its moving parts. It’s recommended to have it replaces every 30,000-60,000 miles so if you haven’t had it replaced recently, it’s time to do so.

Burnt, Cloudy Transmission Fluid

Normal transmission fluid is bright red, but over time can turn dark and opaque. When this happens, it’s time to have your transmission flushed to prevent further damage. It’s important to have this done immediately because the longer you wait, the more damage you can face.
