4 Important Vehicle Checks to Complete Before Winter
December 4, 2019
Winter is almost here, and with it comes low temperatures and storms that cause roads to become slippery and dangerous for Maryland drivers. Avoid accidents and breakdowns this winter by completing the following vehicle safety checks:
#1 – Tire Condition
There are a few important checks to make when it comes to your tires this season:
Tread – If you haven’t replaced your tires in a long time, the tread depth on each one may be getting low. Your tires need a good amount of tread depth in order to allow your vehicle to gain traction when driving on snowy, icy, or rainy roads.
Pressure – Many of us notice our tire pressure lights popping up on the dash when temperatures start to drop. Keeping your tires filled with the factory-recommended amount of air is vital to avoiding flat tires and accidents.
Balance & Wear – If your tires have an uneven amount of wear, it might be time for a tire balance and rotation. Uneven wear can cause your vehicle to lose traction and may lead to an accident in unfavorable winter weather conditions.
#2 – Heating System
Just as you wouldn’t want to get stuck driving in the summer with a vehicle that doesn’t have a working A/C system, it can be just as dangerous to find yourself without any heat during the cold months. If your heating system has been under-performing lately, or if you had heating issues last winter and never got around to fixing them, it’s best to bring your vehicle into the shop to have it inspected and repaired by a professional before winter.
#3 – Your Car’s Battery
Cold temperatures can slow down the chemical reactions that are required to generate power in your car’s battery since your vehicle needs more current from the battery in order to start the engine and get you moving. Don’t risk being late for work or getting stuck with a dead battery while out running errands and get your battery cables and fluid checked.
#4 – Emergency Supplies
The inner and outer workings of your vehicle are important to maintain to ensure your safety on the road, but there’s one other type of check you should make before winter, and that’s to make certain you are prepared for emergencies.
Winter brings freezing temperatures and bad weather conditions that can be unbearable to experience. If you have an emergency in your vehicle, you might find yourself stranded for an uncomfortable amount of time.
