My Car Makes a Noise When I Brake
August 15, 2017
The last thing anyone ever wants is to hear a noise when they hit the brakes. It’s discerning, even more so if you’re not sure what the problem is. The good news is, there are a few ways to get a general sense of why the brakes are making a noise by listening to the kind of sound they are making.
A Common Problem is Your Brake Pads
As brake pads wear down, the metal underneath the pad starts rubbing against the brake rotor. This wear can be identified by a high-pitched squealing coming from the tires. As the wear gets worse, that high-pitched sound will often become present even if you’re not hitting your brakes.
If the sound is less high-pitched and is more of a metallic grinding sound, it might be an indication your brake pads are damaging your rotors. If this is the case, it’s something you will want to have your Annapolis automotive mechanic fix immediately to avoid a more expensive repair cost.
If your brakes are making a pulsating sound accompanied by your brake pedal pulsing and your vehicle not slowing down as smoothly as it should, your rotor may be warped. This means the brake rotor is no longer in line with the wheel. Getting this fixed is important because not slowing down as quickly or smoothly while braking can be alarming and, in heavy traffic or at high speeds, potentially dangerous.
Your rear brakes may also be the cause. The first indication that this may be your issue is the sound coming from the back of the car and not the front. Most commonly, the noise associated with rear brake wear is a thumping noise. This most likely means that the rear brake drums are worn, causing the components of the drum to snap back and hit the backing plate.
How to Fix it
No matter the sound coming from your vehicle, it’s important you get it checked out by a Maryland automotive mechanic. Fixing problems as they arise can prevent more problems down the line, increase the life of your vehicle, and prevent more costly repairs later on.
